Long bed TC on a short bed?

OMG! The DW just said out of the blue,"I miss the cabover where we could go overnight in the little campgrounds and park anywhere." Yowza! I'm in the market! The question is, I have a 2005 Ford f250 extended cab with a bed length of 81", a couple inches shy of 7' . I see short bed TCs are really rare. If I find a basic, no slide, TC used for an 8' bed, is a little overhang ok? Would like some opinions.
  • That's funny. A couple of nice looking campers that I have seen have been for a short bed and mine is an eight footer. Go figure.
  • If you can find a SnowRiver 8'10 they are strong enough, and with a forward COG too. They will be a good fit.

You might have to go to 19.5 wheels and tires to carry it, but it is a nice rig.
  • If it's meant to be a long bed camper only I wouldn't do it. My 11' camper was DESIGNED to hang off the back of the bed. It has a kink in the floor there where the back end has started to sag down.
It will probably be rather difficult to get the COG in a good spot.
Some campers were made for either bed length. The Lance 815 comes to mind as one such camper. One of those would probably work out.
  • There are SB campers for sale. You might have to go out of state for one, but they're out there.

SB truck and LB camper might not work too well. The COG might behind the rear axle. That makes unsafe handling.

However....here is a site that I came across . I would research it and get opinions on this.

  • This 835 is for a Ford longbed. I`ve been traveling for 10 years with it. I have about 20 lbs in my airbags and put Rancho 9000x shocks on it.

  • Well at least you have the longer wheelbase of a super cab. Your stock 17" rims are probably not up to the task, but it is easy enough to get some stock Ford 18" rims that have a slightly higher rim weight rating, and come with E rated tires in the 3,400 pound each range.

At least you have a 2005 with a 10,000 GVWR. That is more than the F-350 SRW had in 2004. Your truck is rated to carry about 3,000 pounds. You will be pushing it with most campers, so look for a fairly light one. Don't plan on carrying a lot of weight either, the longer trips with the larger motorhome.

    Have fun!

  • I have a long bed and it sure seemed like there were more shortbed campers for sale when we were shopping. Our old rig was a shortbed Chev. with a 6.5' box and we carried an 8.5' S&S with no problems. Went with the longbed when we wanted a little more room and still be able to tow a trailer.
  • Thanks for the advice! I did not know to consider the wheels so I learned a lot.
  • Checkout the new Adventurer 80rb Truck Camper.
