I've got a short bed, and it's never caused me a problem, and I don't use a slider hitch. Though to be fair, the corners on my fiver are fairly rounded.
Chose it because it fits in the garage, and we get a LOT of hail here, so parking outside is a frequent insurance deductible waiting to happen. After getting five vehicles repaired over the last 9 years, one with more than $13k damage (from two hail storms a week apart).. and a new roof on the house, new gutters, new garage door, and all new windows, nothing gets parked outside if I can help it.
If we had a bigger garage, I'd have the long box. The additional cargo space would be useful, as would the possibly larger fuel tank.
Maybe once the kids finish school, so we can move out of town... I can dream.
