DEF usage is about 2 percent of fuel usage. At 15,000 miles and 15mpg they should have used around 20 gal of DEF to their 16 actual.
Is 2 percent really typical?
We've got 12,000 miles on our '16 Ram Cummins. We pulled a 12k 5th wheel for 7,000 of those 12,000 miles. We've only used 8.5 gallons of DEF (1 percent). If we hadn't towed, I'm sure our DEF usage would have dropped to 4-5 gallons (.6 percent). That's in stark contrast to the 16 gallons of DEF this Nissan Cummins used after 15,000 miles (with little towing).
FWIW, I've noticed huge discounts on these Nissan Cummins online. Based on just MSRP, IMO they're not at all competitive; however, if you can pick one up for 20-25 percent off MSRP, I think this truck could provide some good value---even in spite of the high DEF usage, limited payload, and less than stellar MPG's.
