We've never unloaded--we like having our stuff with us to sightsee! But if I were working a season or something long term, I think I would unload it.
If we were sightseeing in a tight city though, it would probably be better to offload it. Our camper is small, but it keeps us out of parking structures. We had to pretend along with a parking attendant in Monterey that it wasn't the forbidden RV; it was a truck with a shell.
