Looking at a 2013 Ram 2500 Hemi....input?

Also whats the payload rating on that truck, per drivers door if you don't mind looking?

After a second test drive, I bought the truck.....my son picked out a very well equipped truck and it rides like a half ton with the low tire air pressure system that allows you tomdeflate the tires when not towing.

I came home the longest way I could find to get to drive my new toy. All interstate and I set the cruise on 70 wwith the a/c on....i expected 14-15 mpg, but i got 19.4 on the dash mpg meter. Not sure how accurate that is, but if it is close I am super surprised. My GMC never ever got 14 mpg straight hiway.

The truck is super comfortable, very easy to drive and stable....I think I made a good choice and wont know for sure until I tow in two weeks....looking forward to it.....

The 2014 RAM 2500s will have offer a 6.4L Hemi (410 hp/429tq) WITH the MDS system that they claim will get better MPG than the 5.7L Hemi in the 2500, even with more power. It will also have the availability of air ride suspension. That's why the 13s are going cheap.

I have a 2012 hemi 1500 with 3.92 gears. My tt is 7400lb and my gross combined weight is 13,200lbs. For the flat lands are gradual hills I can pull mostly in 5th. Speed I've noticed is a huge factor as towing at 65 mph requires much more shifting into 4th while towing between 60-62 requires much less shifting so I tend to go a little slower. Larger hill have required shifting into 3rd.

For what you describe I think you'll be happy. For 2014 the 2500 will be getting a larger 6.4 hemi with cylinder deactivation. It will also be getting rear coil suspension for a better ride. Something to consider since your not towing a lot. However if you don't want to wait another year I think that truck would make you very happy if your not towing in the rockies.

My friend who has pulled at least 20000 miles with me has a 2009 Ram 2500 with the Hemi. It does have the 4:10 rear end and 5 speed transmission. He pulls right at 8000 plus pounds 5th wheel. He never complains about fuel mileage, but I know it's in the 8-10 range, sometimes a little less depending on wind conditions. I pull about the same weight with a 2010 Cummins and he never has a problem keeping up with me in the hills. I am sure the Cummins shifts less, in more quiet in the hills and I do always spend less at the pumps when my fuel is more expensive, however I paid much more up front. I can use cruise control more than he wants to because his Hemi will down shift more to keep the set speed. With that being said I think you would have the 6 speed and I know that the 2010's and newer will ride much better, so there would be a plus. I do not know his empty mileage, but, again he does not complain and again he does have the 4:10. I do believe it's 17-18 in normal driving though.

You just told what your needs are so even if it wasn't a perfect tow vehicle it should do the job for you.

My 2012 Ram 2500 Cummins gets better mpg as a daily driver than my 2006 Ram 1500 Hemi did, even though the Hemi had the variable cylinder thingy and was a lighter truck (extended cab vs crew cab).
