Looking at a 2013 Ram 2500 Hemi....input?

My son sells Dodges and Chryslers and offered me a super deal on a 2013 Ram Hemi 2wd crew cab with a 3.73 rear end. I dont need 4wd, and I have no real need for a diesel, as I tow about five time a year. Four times a year we go about 100 miles, and once a year we go from St Louis to Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin....about 500 miles.

Anyway, I absolutely dislike my current GMC extended cab truck. It is a work truck with crank up windows and rides like a battle wagon...my wife hates to ride in it. We test drove the Dodge and it rides much nicer for a 3/4 ton truck.

I would appreciate any input from anyone towing 8000 pounds or so with a ram 2500 hemi. I am not too concerned about mpg....expecting 7-10. my bigger concern kt tHe towing experience....downshifting, rpms towing, etc.

Thanks in advance..

  • Thanks for the input....the hemi in the 2500 doesnt have the feature of rurning off cylinders to save gas....all 8 running and sucking gas all the time.

I know from experience that a v8 gas truck of any kind is going to burn a lot of fuel and gear down for hills.

I looked at a few diesels, but I am really intimidated by them, and honestly dont feel it would be a good choice for a daily drive, since I only tow a few time a year...
  • my friend gets horrible mileage with his Hemi. never gets to the point where it will drop a cylinder or whatever it is supposed to do to save on gas.

It's going to tow about the same as you current truck. If you are fine with that then the other stuff is just added bonus. Does this '13 have the 8 speed? If so then that should help keep the rpm from soaring to bad.
  • I tow 6000-8000lbs with my Hemi on a regular basis.. I have the 4:56 gears w/35" tires and an older heavier truck and I can say it does fine on the flats but does like to downshift and sing in the hills - which is no problem, you just can't be afraid to let it rev and drop into 3rd gear. So with a newer & lighter truck I would think no problem in your case :)

And yes - 7-8 mpg is normal for any gasser...
