You pull the trailer with the hitch not the bumper. Our X came from the factory with a class 4 hitch and we pull a trailer that is around 8000 lb. and it has done well for over 180,000 miles. The X curb weight is about 7200 lb and our tongue weight is about 1000 lb so there isn't much room left for stuff in the X. We are empty nesters with a 30 lb dog and we carry three chairs and two bikes in the back and the rear axle is about 200 or 300 lb under rating.
If we had a big family I think we might need to find a different tow vehicle.
