OK. Time to straighten out a few things here!
An 8600lb GVWR Excursion has the 5.4L. They did that for emissions purposes.
A V-10 X has an 8900lb GVWR
A diesel X has a 9200lb GVWR
Yes, the bumper itself is rated for 5000lbs/500lb tongue weight. The hitch under the bumper (all X's have a hitch, it's part of the rear end impact crash system so it doesn't crush the fuel tank or a car doesn't go under it) is rated at approx 10k lbs on early X's and 12,500 on 02-05 the only difference being the attaching hardware! The V-10 with 4.30's and all diesels (3.73 only). Have a 20k lb GCVWR. IIRC a V-10 with 3.73's is rated at 17klbs combined. Not sure on the 5.4.

The X is very Capeable of towing it's rated capacity. I'm towing 9200lbs with no issues.
