So just food for thought I recently took my 2001 Excursion Limited to the dump which has a digital scale as you pull up. With just myself (270lbs), full tank of gas and nothing else I was 71xxlbs. That leaves roughly 1500-1800lbs for passengers + hitch weight.
Those of us that tow with the Excursion's typically of the bat change tires out to load range E tires. From the factory they came with load range D's. Depending on the year they may not have a rear sway bar, I recently added a Hellwig rear sway bar. This made a HUGE difference in the body roll with the excursion.
For the suspension if you go to the ford trucks forum most guys will recommend swapping out the leaf spring packs with X/C code springs. Essentially the Excursion came with a bit lighter springs, and the rears were exceptionally soft compared to the F250/F350 counter parts. If you can get a decent deal you can go that route, myself I have Airlift 5,000 airbags coming to assists.
I will tell you with my new camper's dry hitch weight of 850lbs, I hooked it up to my truck and it sat perfectly level and towed fine with the weight distribution hitch + anti sway. Just depends on how much overkill.
The only other thing I recently did was have a 5-Star tune added. What this has done with V10 for towing is change shift points, keeps the motor in it's power band and shifts firmer. Made a big difference for how it handles.
If you have Excursion specific questions I would recommend going to the Ford Excursion forum on fordtrucks and chat with those guys that actually own them, lots of fellas over here that have never owned them, nor towed them, nor know the specs on the them will run off info that is not necessarily correct.
