Find a 7.3 or the newer 6.7 engine.  As mentioned, avoid the 6.0. If your budget does not allow a new 2010 and up 6.7 and you cannot find a well cared for  older 1999-2002 7.3 engine, consider looking for a 5.9 Dodge or Chevy. Last year the 5.9 Dodge was made was 2006, I believe. Not sure of the better years for Chevy diesels, but they were better than the Ford 6.0 engines, IMO.
I am a Ford guy and have a 2002 Ford F-250 with the 7.3 engine with 215K on it and the engine has been totally trouble free, except for perishable parts like water pumps.
If I had to get rid of my beloved old truck today,I would probably find a low mileage 2015 or left over new 2016 Ford F-250/350 with the 6.7 diesel engine.
