Looking for a Bosch fuel pump update

Can somebody give me a brief update on Bosch fuel pumps. I am not looking to start a 50 page thread, but am wondering if somebody could tell me briefly if there is a new Bosch version that "supposedly" fixes the past issues.

I have done some 4m searches, but the threads are usually so long, its hard to gander what is happening.

Thx!

It seems Bosch has a version 4 out now. Or is that what they always had? I am "hoping" this fixes or addresses the issues version 3 "supposedly" had. I have read most of the 120 page thread, started by you (and linked again in this thread). I just haven't run across a definitive post discussing version 4. Maybe a description is buried in that 120 page thread, but I don't feel like looking through all 120 pages, hoping to find a description of version 4.

I am thinking of buying a VW TDI sometime next year, so am curious about version 4. From the sounds of it, nobody really knows anything yet.

    I guess time will tell.

Buy it, VW has a 10 year 100,000 mile warranty on the drive train, and yes, the HPFP is included in that. I trailer with mine. A little early with only 8300 miles on it, but 2500 of those miles are towing 3800 pounds, a 19 foot travel trailer.

Long time TDI owner here, and have looked at a lot of the trends in HPFP failures... Shell diesel fuel along with Valero here on the West Coast comprise a lot of the failures... far fewer failures on Chevron, Conoco Phillips and Sinclair diesel fuels, in my observations.

More likely to have failures in hot coastal states, CA, AZ, TX and FL.
  • Also Bosch has changed manufacturing locations of their CP 4 series pumps.

Previously made in Germany, a supposed improved version now made in the Czech Republic.
  • It is about pump model numbers:

Bosch CP3 series pumps are still used on the Ram/Cumin
Bosch CP3 pumps were used in GM's until 2011
Bosch CP4.1 pumps,a single cylinder pump, are used in single cylinder bank engines like the VW TDI
Bosch CP4.2 pumps, a 2 cylinder pump, are used by Ford and GM in their 2011 and newer engines

According to part number changes for the CP4.2 pumps used in the Ford, there have been at least a few revisions to the design.

I'm not sure as to "versions" you mention, like Turtle stated. Bosch CP.3 has been used in Ram from like 2003 to yet to be released 2013 models. It was also used in DMAX engines from roughly the same period up until MY 2011.
CP.3 pumps will not run as high of a pressure as the new CP.4, but they had a stellar record for non failure. CP.4 didn't enjoy the same success rate although we don't truly know the failure percentage with the CP.4. I would think its low since no recalls have been issued as of yet.
Suggest you also go to the VW forums. Lots and I mean lots of information over there as these Euro vehicles have been using these pumps a couple of years longer than Ford and GM have. I believe they are the single piston pumps though, but same problems.
    Good Luck

Thanks. Your post answers my question. I was hoping there might be a CP.5 already released, and I hadn't heard about it.

If you're a big company (think Bosch) and put out a, um, "questionable product" (think CP4 pump) are you going to announce to the world that you fixed your screwup of the past?

Or do you think that you might not say anything to anybody but just have your team of engineers come up with a fix for the problem and quitely implement the new fix?

About the only time these things come to light is when one of two things happen

#1. They go to court and we the people get to read documents on what was really going on.

#2. You find someone from Bosch that will talk.

Good luck but I think you would have better luck looking for needles in a haystack.

But you have potentially because lost will the historical comments
being repeated over and over again

Why I've linked this thread back to that 120 page thread
