Looking for advice on GMC rear shocks

I have a 2015 GMC Sierra with the max trailering package (NHT option) . It is definitely an upgrade from my 08 F150. Its rated at 10,600 with the tow pack which apparently is supposed to have rear shocks tuned for towing as well as leaf spring upgrades which add 400lbs to the GVWR over the regular Sierra. 6.2 L V8 is sweet too. Anyhooo, Ive noticed that when towing my 2014 Zinger which is anywhere from 6300 (empty) to 7400lbs I get a lot of bouncing compared to the F150 of old. Not sure if this is because the GMC rides way softer unloaded, or if I just need to look into a stiffer rear shock, possible a load carrier by Gabrial or Monroe. I did upgrade the F150 to Monroe coil over rear load adjusting shocks which dod make in improvement in ride for the Ford. Just not sure if I shoudl consider this for the GMC where it supposed to have better tuned shocks in the first place.

Four year old shocks might be worn out.

Definite possibility. Also, did you readjust your WD hitch for the new truck, or did you just connect and go? I'd suggest going back through the WD Hitch Setup Procedure to make sure you're getting proper weight transfer. It's free and only takes a little time. If you still have bouncing then start looking at shock replacement.

  • I replaced the shocks on my 2012 Silverado with Bilstiens at around 70 000 miles. It was so much better. With my 2017 Silverado with the high payload option I put Bilstiens on at around 7 or 8 000 miles. The OEM shocks were too bouncy for my liking. The Bilstiens are worth it. Oh - I did all 4 corners.
  • Factory shocks are terrible when new. Yours are 4 years old so worse than that. Get some Bilsteins, KYB MonMax, or something else good.
  • ^ This.
My 2016 Silverado 1500 work truck shocks are shot. 60k miles on it and they've been done since about 40k. I did drive a stretch of mtn pass last year about 100x that is very similar to the woops section on a supercross track, sometimes towing heavy, other times driving just slow enough it wouldn't bottom out! lol
    That did them in.
  • it might be something as simple as the sway controller you have. you might make a few adjustments to the set up and see it that makes a difference
