While I have not owned a Tacoma, I have researched them extensively since I am some what on the hunt for a new vehicle.
The 2wd SR5 Tacoma Double Cab I test drove had about 1100 lbs of payload per the door sticker.
The motor, while reliably (proven track record), it seems to make its power up higher in the RPM powerband.
This is a reliable truck that is capable of towing the said load.
It will Rev high in the RPM band on the Hills but it should have enough power to pull the trailer.
You will probably need a WD hitch, brake controller, and some common sense (set things up per instructions, load carefully.. etc.)
