Our adult son is a backpack camper .
He also camps with us on Boat/Tent campouts and TT campouts .
They live about 140 miles away and we meet them at various camp spots in Oregon .
They have a Honda CRV .
We have a diesel pickup .
Because they backpack they have assembled their camp gear to be very light weight .
The intial investment in lighter gear is higher but they don't have to pay for a diesel pickup at 1.6 times the cost of their CRV .
When we were river raft people in the 1980's we only used lightweight high tech gear as a necessity .
It is definitely possible to cut our camping gear weight to half what we are now .
We did it 30 years ago and the lightweight gear is so much better now .
REI has tons of light gear and some of that is duplicated at costco and BiMart .
