I think the dealer is blowing smoke up the wrong end. I've been in the car business for 23 years the last 19 as a manager. I can assure you it's not lost, the dealer knows, he is hiding something from you. Either he hasn't been able to get the vehicle accepted for production due to his allocation contraints or if it has been built its in a rail yard somewhere waiting to be shipped on. Either way the dealer can tell you if he will be honest with you.
Back about 15 years ago i had a friend/customer of our dealership ordered a new Suburban every year at the very beginning of the year. Of all people to have this happen to it had to happen to him. Anyway the truck had been built but it kept showing in transit for 8 weeks which was way out of the ordinary. I kept rattling chains at the transport company and low and behold they found the truck in the back of a rail yard waiting too be picked up. It had became a home for illegal's living in it. By the way this was back when the Suburban's were built in Mexico. You don't want to know the condition when it arrived at the dealership.
Tell the dealer you want your deposit back and go explore your options. I have a feeling that may bring the truth out of him very quick. Ask him if the vehicle has a vin number issued yet, that will tell you if it's been built or not. No vin means it hasn't been built yet. I would bet it's due to the dealer not having the available allocation due to contraints. This is especially the case in smaller dealerships.

I've bought vehicles since 1965. In that time I've factory ordered two. Both came on time, both were exactly as ordered. I was very happy with getting exactly what I ordered.
They were both Chevrolets.
