I've found that over the years with foreign verses domestic vehicles too. Foreign vehicles don't live up to the hype. They break as much if not more than domestic vehicles with the exception of Chrysler body parts. But as I've experienced with myself and family members, we don't like to admit that we got suckered into the foreign vehicle fad so we tend to deny the problems they have. So far at 86k miles, my F250 has been flawless with the exception of two O2 sensors and a rear brake caliper bracket. The Prius at 23k is so far trouble free. Time will tell.
Grouping all foreign vehicles into one category is misleading.
My experience has been Japanese cars are more reliable than most. German and some others seem no better than American.
....and my experience is different. We have a Toyota Matrix since new and it's less reliable since our same year Buick. Our Buick, bought new the same year, has accumulated twice the miles....but has been much more trouble free.
I'd buy another Buick, but not another Toyota...given my experience.
Generalizations never seem to be accurate....and as you say...'misleading'.
