Yea, supporting it is a good thing. I misspelled my first reply and corrected it.
... the tailgate really is not designed for weight, I found out the hard way on an earlier pick up when I tried to haul home a bunch of 16' PS joists. I figured 8' bed, about 2' of folded-down tailgate would give me 4' overhang with a red flag.
Well it worked and I got it home, but damaged the tailgate from the weight.
