The rack and the box I'll fabricate probably won't weigh a total of more than 45 pounds. I need a place for my bicycles' front wheels, a couple camp chairs and other light-weight stuff. I know it'll be high weight, but I'm willing to give it a try. When I pull my cargo trailer, I won't need the top-box. However, I don't want to pull my trailer for every bicycle excursion. I tried a receiver hitch rack for the bikes, but I can't access the coach without removing the bikes. I'm putting a ladder rack together, today actually, to carry the bikes with a fork mount, so the front wheels gotta go somewhere. Inside the coach would be a PITA, too. I've considered a front, receiver hitch rack, and I may go with that when/if I get a generator, but, for now, roof rack it is. As for the tree branch, a box will be my early warning system, before I rip out my A/C unit. When I store the coach, I'll be sure to leave it out of level enough for water to roll off the back of my cover (in a perfect world).
You may be correct about the high weight issue, but I gotta try it for myself. I'd guess anything I put up there would be less than one of my canoes, which are about 70 pounds and will probably find their way up there for a trip or two.

The ladder looks great. Wish I could get one. My camper doesn't have the blocking inside the wall to support one. :(
