MagneTek 3240 replacement

My converter in my '95 Sunnybrook TT has started intermittent humming and the lights are dimming. Based on what I've read, this means the converter is probably going bad. Correct?

I have a MagneTek 3240 unit. I have never replaced one or worked on one, other than checking fuses. This unit sits in a plywood stand under the sofa. Removing the sofa will make it very accessible.

What replacement unit should I consider? It is a 40 amp unit. I would think I would want a smart charger in the new unit.

Thanks.
  • I replaced mine with a Progressive unit with the charge wizard. The folks at Best Converter can tell you what should fit.
  • Yes, more than likely, a bad converter. You will probably want to assess the health of your battery at the time you replace the converter. Any auto parts store will load test the battery.

I have a Progressive Dynamics converter. It is 44 years old and still working fine. I have no other recommendation.

If you contact Best Converters and ask to speak to Randy, he will give you the model # and pricing on a converter replacement that won't involve replacing the distribution center.

Good luck with your 12V issues. I would replace that Magnetek sooner rather than later. It may be stressing things connected to 12 V.
