Making a semi-permanent/removeable mount for Dish Tailgater

Afternoon all,

So, I've had a Dish Tailgater for years. Been a great product, but I've always wanted to make a mount that allowed me to keep it attached to the camper most of the time, but when I decide to park under trees, make it removable so I can move it away from the trees.

So full disclaimer - a buddy of mine works for a family owned fab shop in Tacoma and cut all this on a C n C water-jet then welded it up. I just gave him the concept and the measurements, then also did what you see in the pics after he fab'd it up for me.

So the goal was to make it so I didn't drill into the roof except for the cable, and make it so it can take a 70mph wind up there going down the highway. I opted to attach it to the luggage rack.

He fab'd up a 1" square bar with mount plates on each end with holes for U-Bolts to mount to the rack, and bolts welded to the 1" for a dish mount.

Next, on his water-jet, we used 3/16" plate steel to fashion a dish mount.

With dish mount and cross bar done, attached everything with stainless hardware, and drilled a hole next to where the existing radio antenna is mounted to run the coax. Got out the zippy ties, and then Dicor'd the snot out of it.

Next -- the removable end of this. I DJ for a hobby, so I used a speaker tripod and speaker pole-mount. They're rated up to 75lbs, more than enough for a little 3lb dish.

Took a speaker pole-mount and attached it to some 1/2" pine and made a second mount plate using the same bolt holes as the rooftop mount.

And presto.....

And in the event there is wind, some simple motorcycle straps (using whatever is available, I have tent stakes with me in the TC)

Next - to make switching from rooftop to tripod easy, I installed an A/B coax switch and ran a pigtail to the outside of the TC. The Tailgater comes with a 50' run of coax, so I've just used that.

And here's it in action on my last 10-day trip to a campground in the North Idaho Rockies

Don't be hatin on the tv outside... I was there for 10 days! My buddies all showed up the day after this pic was taken, so most of the time was spent ridin, bbq and some red cups. There's a 32" tv inside the camper with the receiver, this one is another one I keep in the trailer.

On the TC

  • Looks pretty cool. I wonder if I could use the same dish camping and at home. :) Well, I don't have a dish yet, but if I get any tv at all, I'm going to have to.

How well do the tailgaters work compared to the permanent mounts?

THE only reason I have Dish is because of this thing. I have a permanent Dish w/dvr at home and the Tailgater with another receiver in the TC. The Tailgater is awesome - makes up for a LOT of frustrating calls to Dish Customer no-Service.

Set the Tailgater outside in an area it can see south, turn on the power, tell the receiver which state you're in (not drunk or intoxicated, one of 50 US states), and in about 5 minutes you're watching HD TV. It's completely self-pointing. DirecTV has a similar setup, but last time I checked, it costs 3x as much and is not HD, just SD.

So like I said, if it wasn't for this thing, I'd be on just Comcast cable at the house, no dish at all.

    Pro's --
    * Very portable
    * Very reliable - if it can see to the south, it will find the satellites, even in the rain.
    * Whatever channels you're subscribed to at home you get in the TC - with one exception covered in 'cons'.
    * It's matching receiver is relatively lower power drain, ~30 watts total, great to know if you run off inverter a lot.

    Con's--
    * If you travel outside your hometown too far, you lose your locals. You can, however, call dish and get the locals for wherever you are. Good example - I boondock at Coos Bay, Oregon during Hawks pre-season. A local channel in Eugene get the Hawks games. One call and I then get all the locals for Eugene.
    * I boondock a lot on inverter, no shore power. Every time you kill the power to it, it has to completely re-do it's start up procedure.
    * When your TC is in storage at home, if the receiver is not connected to a dish and powered, it loses it's authorization in just a few weeks. Next time you go to use it, you must call Dish and get it re-authorized. Big problem if you're camping somewhere with no cell service, which I frequently do. I now have a second dish mounted to my shop and it's only purpose is to keep the TC receiver 'alive'.
  • Nice. I made a much simpler mount. Where you bolted into the bottom of the Tailgater I threaded in studs and used wing nuts to attach it to the base. Then if reception is a problem I just undo the wing nuts and move the tailgater, but it'll just sit on the ground. No nice tripod and post.

One thing you're giving up vs a fixed mount is multi channel capabilities. You can't watch one channel and DVR a second or watch another channel in a different room. That and, as Boatycall mentioned, when you first power up it's about a 5 minute align/setup procedure but you're only involvement there is telling you which state you're in. That only happens when you first connect AC to the receiver. Turning off the receiver does not remove power to the Tailgater which will occasionally do a search to verify alignment on each of the 3 satellites. This could be an issue if you boondock and have limited battery capacity so I always turn off the inverter before going to bed then live with the 5 minute setup in the morning. I've been told just disconnecting the RF cable between the tailgater and receiver but leaving the receiver connected to AC eliminates the realignment problem. Just reconnect the RF cable to the tailgater, turn on the receiver and start watching TV. I've yet to verify this though.

I just noticed that.... It worked fine when I posted it. I was getting sick of them anyway. They were making it virtually impossible to post pics because pop up's and ads clogged my browser to the point it stalled out.

I'll find somewhere else to keep my pics and edit my post.

On my end they work now. Please give me feedback as to whether or not you can see the images after my edit.
