There was life before the slideout, the Internet, the flat panel TV, the iPhone, and a whole bunch of other stuff that was invented in the last 40 years. Look what electronics has done to the automatic, the manual transmission is almost obsolete. I was reading in a car magazine that Ferrari was *close* to not offering a fully manual transmission because the electronic servo clutches ijn the automatic can shift the trans faster than you can do it manually.
I had an 85 Golf with a 5 speed and drove that thing in, out and around NYC for many years when I was in field sales. Worst thing was it had no cupholders, so learned to shift with a cup of take out coffee in my right hand.
If you like to shift, more power to you, but there are no advantages to running a manual over an auto these days, IF you have a good automatic. I'm with Terry, the fewer times I have to press a clutch pedal the better. I paid my clutch-pedal-pushing dues. If I had an antique or custom car that I didn't have to drive every day, I might consider it.....
