I had a manual in my '03 Ram. I ordered it that way because it was actually rated to tow more then the automatic. Kept the truck for 9 years and was happy with it. I did not have trouble towing in the mountains, or driving in stop and go rush hour traffic. It will take a llittle skill to back up a hill to hook up to your trailer. My wife and father had trouble with it when they were pulling up the boat ramp, but they could do it. All in all it was a good experience.
When I bought my 2012 the tables had turned. As others said, the autos are now rated to tow more and allow more power then the manual. I thought I would miss the stick but I don't. Not even a little bit. I can't see me every having a stick in a truck again.
Even sports cars are changing. The Porsche PDK is faster then the same car with a stick. If I were buying a new sports car today, I would seriously consider an auto, especially something with a dual cluth paddle shifters, but I digress.
Technology changes everything. Transmissions are no exception.
