Yep, it's been a "fail" in the Focus, but the concept is sound. It is my understanding that some of the large Terex mining trucks use this type of setup, so it can be made to work.
One has to think that Ford just tried to make this thing as lighweight as possible in the Focus and that may have doomed it. Also, they have tried to make it "shift" as smooth as possible, which is possibly also at the root of their reliability issues.
Either way, I would not one, whether it works correctly or not. I like a manual transmission and a regular clutch because I like to drive them.
