Mattress Toppers

OK, I have an upgraded Serta 5" short queen in my new TT. It is hard as a rock and not very comfortable.

I've read that some of you have added a mattress topper and have been fairly to very happy.

I saw at Sam's Club a Dreamfinity 4 inch memory foam topper with a 5 year warranty for $99.98

My questions:

1. What is the difference between memory foam and with gel?

2. Is there an advantage of one vs the other?

3. Can the memory foam be cut to size?

4. What should I be looking for? Are there ones to avoid?

Again, I'm looking to the experts for your comments and suggestions.

Thanks.

  • Just purchased a Serta gel infused 3" memory foam topper from menards last Saturday after not sleeping well on Friday, made a huge difference. Supposedly the gel infused foam keeps you cooler....it did for us.
  • I'm not an expert either, but a topper filled with gel would cause me to be overly warm. Foam might be better for air circulation.
  • We went with the Perfect Harmony topper that CW sells. It has a base of 2" with memory foam and then another 2" of poly fill on top. We bought it based on the reviews that said it is cooler than an all-foam style.

We are very happy with the comfort. I also appreciate how it has a full skirt for keeping it on the mattress (and it makes it easier for me to put a fitted sheet on it if the topper isn't moving around).

The only downside we've had is it tends to compress where we sleep, so there are 2 long indentations with a bit of a mound in between. Not a big deal for all the additional comfort it provides.
  • Gel toppers tend to breathe better providing somewhat cooler sleeping is our experience from the many toppers we have tried over the years. Most toppers should pose no problem if attempting to cut them to size. We have purchased a couple of toppers from Samsclub and they are well made and have performed well.

Keep in mind that many toppers will have a base foam with the memory foam layer just on the last inch or two, thus a 4" memory foam topper may only have a inch or two of actual memory foam. One of the first mods we did was to get a topper, my DW and I had back-aches first time out and was the only negative issue we experienced on our maiden voyage.
  • I'm not an expert, but I have added a memory foam topper to the mattress in our TT and love it! I don't remember the brand, or if it is 3" or 4", but I got it at Walmart for slightly less than $100 back in 2008. It is a few inches longer than the TT mattress, but it has a cover and I didn't cut it off. It hangs over a little, but a regular sized fitted sheet covers it fine and we don't worry about it. My suggestion: DO IT!
  • Not sure of the differences between memory foam and gel. We have the memory foam and IT CAN be cut to fit. Ours (from Costco) came with a separate cover. We cut the foam to fit and then inserted into the cover, just folded the end of the cover under the foot end.
    DW loved it.

  • While I do not have the Sam's Club 4" memory foam I do have a 4" without jell and a 2" with the jell
The 2" with jell is much more comfortable than the 4" sans jell. We think it gives more support.
We have cut both the 4" and the 2" with a straight edge and a box cutter. Went well.
FWIW I got my 2" from Amazon and it is a short queen
