Max being towed with an F150 Ecoboost

I recommend the 5.0L as it's one hek of an engine and much more powerful than the outgoing 2009/2010 5.4L in low rpm torque and high rpm horsepower. I had a 2010 and couldn't believe how much better the 5.0L towed. The reason I brought this up as the 5.4L had the Max Tow package option if you wanted it even though it was less powerful than the 5.0L that does not have that option.

If you need the Max Tow option, for 2013 Ford is offering the 6.2L on XLT trims and above that will have the Max Tow Package option.

Once Ford finds a fix for the intercooler issue, the Ecoboost should be a great engine.

Although I do not tow every. 60 days year round I would if I could :).

I have a SuperCrew with the 157" wheel base Max Tow / HD Payload (8200 GVWR) and tow a trailer that is 8150 fully loaded. It has towed this rig well and I am happy with the setup. I am at less than 90% of GVWR and GCVWR however the receiver is rated for 1150 and I am right at 1100. I consider this to be the max capability for the truck towing a TT. The 11k tow rating is for a flatbed at 10% tongue weight.

It took the ecoboost plus HD payload package in a crew cab (first available in 2012) to get me to switch from GM. I've owned 3 5.3's and a 2500HD 6 liter GM. So far, this truck just about matches the suspension of the 2500HD for trailering control and gets better mileage than the 5.3's, with 420 ft-lb TQ at 2500 RPM and is as close as you can get to dead silent, even towing. What else does a guy need?

I've only pulled the trailer about 2000 miles with ours in the past year. I love the truck to death... I freaked out a little bit when I started having the limp mode problems during long drives through wet weather, but the redesigned intercooler seems to have resolved that so far. Our trailer is less then 6k lbs loaded, and it pulls real nice in all conditions I've been through.

Here's an excerpt from a previous thread of mine.

"OK, I'm officially in love with the EcoBoost. After towing a tortuous 100 miles in the Ozarks, with lots of hills and curves, I learned that the tow/haul tranny is smart enough to know how fast you want to go. You tap the brake to get to the desired speed on a downgrade, and it will downshift appropriately and hold you pretty close to that speed. Today's 160 miles included some divided highway with some fairly steep grades to pull. One of them tempted me to step on it to see what it would do. It promptly climbed to 70 mph at about 4000 rpm. The 5.3 (Chevy I had before) would have been doing 4000 rpm, to maybe hold 50 mph. Mileage is still running just a little over 10."

Mine is the 145" wheelbase. Seems pretty stable to me, but I don't have anything to compare to. I like it because it is easier than a longer truck to get into parking spaces, including my garage.

I did have the intercooler condensation issue once after driving several hours in steady rain. I took it to the dealer and they reflashed the computer. I've tried to duplicate the problem again on rainy days, but it has not failed again. I'm very pleased with my truck. It will get up to 22 mpg on the highway if running 55-60, about 18-19 if running 72-75.

First pull this past weekend. Our truck pulled just under 2hrs to CG and was mostly in 5th gear at 2200rpm d/t wind. Coming home with a heavy cross wind the truck pulled in 4th 3200rpm until we changed direction then back to 5th and occasionally up into 6th. Our TT is close to 6000# loaded. In less then 2 weeks we head to CO for a ~4500km round trip vacation. I'll try and post some reports as we travel.
