TucsonJim, I am nothing but impressed with your attitude taking responsibility. It seems that most just want to find someone else to blame. I really hope you get out of this with the least expense possible.
My brother is a Ford tech and you'd be surprised how many times he's seen it, in fact someone did it at the dealer (fastlane guy), so it does happen.
I have the same truck and it's a concern of mine of doing it absent mindedly one day. I think I'm going to look into getting the locking fuel cap too.
