when I got the truck to the dealer last night, the diesel guy was waiting on me. He already had all the parts on order and will have it torn down for insurance inspection this morning.
While talking to him, I specifically asked him what would happen if I were to have followed my original course of action such as replacing the filters, draining and rinsing the tank, etc. His response was that "once the crystals start forming, you can not get them out by using cetane booster or any other known chemicals". They will continue to grow and typically, they will form on the injectors. If they cause an injector to lock open, the engine will likely hydrolock and result in catastrophic engine damage."
Ouch. Ok, well being the last time i was at diesel school was back in 08 with Dodge and the Cummins they never talked about DEF because they were no where near using the system on the Cummins, they were going regen though. That is the last time i was at a diesel class. So knowing what i know up to about 09 and putting that with the current DEF system and what can happen when put in a diesel tank i withdraw my previous advice. Thankfully you didn't listen to me! Glad it is being taken care of though. I do see in the future that the insurance companies may put a surcharge on diesels or just oa privision that states diesel fuel contamination is not covered!
Good luck to you!
