Thanks for the cautionary tale. I don't think I would have had the humility to tell that story here.
After reading all of this I'm glad the DEF filler on my VW Touareg TDI is not next to the fuel fill door. It requires opening the hatch, lifting up the spare tire storage deck, removing the spare tire, removing a rubber cover, and unscrewing a cap. It is such a PIA that the dealer seemed surprised that I was doing it myself. Luckily 2 gallons lasts about 10,000 miles.
