I drove them in the mid 70's and Craig you are not far off the mark :) We used to remove the steer axle brakes to avoid ditching 'er on snow and ice...
You wouldn't believe how these trucks will whoa up nowadays...

the biggest driving differences will be stopping power, parking brakes, and a FL60 won't "squat" with a measly 4000lbs pin load.
Oh, and Freightliner uses a unique design to access the engine bay for maintenance and repair - you tilt the hood, instead of remove the cab from the chassis. Super duty cab removal for engine repair.
