I average 7,600 miles a year on my diesel pickup. In town, I use 3rd and 4th gears. I use 5th up to 55mph or so. Using the lower gears and the exhaust brake allows the engine to warm up quicker and no regen/soot problems during short runs. The majority of miles on mine are towing. You will definitely enjoy a diesel if you buy one and if you run it in lower gears for your short runs to help it warm up, it will be fine.
