I think it's weird that many of the crossovers have higher towing capacities than minivans. I think it's most likely due to marketing. IIRC the Honda van has a 3500 lb tow rating and the Pilot 5000, even though they are both unibody, front wheel drive (or AWD) vehicles with the same drivetrain. The vans even typically have more payload. My sister loaded up her Honda van with husband, kids and dog and pulled an Rpod type trailer (can't remember the exact brand) all around the country with no issues whatsoever. She did have a WD hitch and never complained about getting dirty. :)
