We have two different switches for the hot water heater. One is electric (on the left). And another for the gas (on the right). The red light is in the middle. We were told that to use the electric (our preference), to turn the switch to on and that if the red light illuminates the heater is not lighting and we were to turn it back off, wait 5 minutes and try again. It would sometimes take an extra try but has always worked in the past. Have we been misled?
We are new at this so I always worry if we are getting the right instructions.

When on electric the red light will come on and stay on. It is supposed to work like that.
When on gas the red light will come on and then stay off when you get ignition. It will come back on if so some reason it doesn't stay lit.
