You've received some great advice here. I also vote for keeping it; it has the best diesel Ford ever put in a truck and will go many more miles with great maintenance. The weak part of the truck is the transmission but that can be upgraded quite easily and relatively inexpensively.
Another thing to do if not done recently is a complete coolant change with Ford coolant with the anti cavitation additive.
What are the recommended transmission upgrades? If they are easy and reasonable maybe I can just do them before I leave.
Never read anything yet as far as upgrades, yes throttle bodies etc, but the only good way to go is either the BTS or John Woods. They are the two recognized on a quality build for the 4R100. If you are going to do it, go with one of them ,and be done.
As said ETG, and transmission gauge is a must.
This is the minimum I would do with that 7.3, and I spent a lot of years with one. AIS Intake, 4" exhaust turbo back, 6.0 intercooler, and transmission cooler, and a DP tuner with a mild tow tune, you can have other tunes ,but just the mild one for towing.
With that many miles ,and if it is still a stock tranny, its iffy. Many suggestions have been made.
