Looking at options for a new TV that will also be a DD. Trying to avoid a 3/4 ton truck if possible, in favor of 1/2 ton or full size SUV. Would be towing a 30' TT - Dry weight 5500 lbs and we add about 1200 lbs to it in gear. Dry tongue weight is about 680 with batteries and propane.
Looking at 2018 F150 with payload package and either 3.5 EcoBoost or 5.0L and a 2017 Yukon (not XL) with 6.2L. Yukon weighs more but has a shorter wheel base.
Payload and towing capacity are sufficient on both and I think either would be fine. Payload is barely sufficient on Yukon. I know a 3/4 ton would be better, but again, I'm trying to avoid if possible. So, which of these options would result in a better and safer towing experience?
How much weight will you also be adding to the truck? I tow a similar size trailer with a 150 as shown in my sig. My payload is 1701 I add roughly 600lbs in passengers and another 200 for gear in the bed of the truck. I always always tow with my fresh water tank full 2 20lb propane tanks and 2 group 27 batteries and I still average to be 120lbs under my trucks GVWR. If you would get the HDPP that would give you roughly another 600lbs of payload capacity as the trucks GVWR will jump from 7050 to 7850. Don't go with a 5.0 for towing I had an 11 it ran good without the trailer but with it it was a dog and gulped fuel. Went to the 3.5's and never looked back I avg 10.5 towing with the 18 and 10 with the 11. My 18 does have the longer wheelbase my 11 is the shorter and that is 2nd on the list in towing requirements. First is payload capacity and 2nd is wheelbase, forget about towing capacity as my trucks is 13k but you can never ever tow a 13k travel trailer with the truck possibly a flatbed trailer but never a TT. The longer wheelbase is much much more stable than the shorter. My TT weighs in around 7200 loaded to camp. My setup has always seemed pretty rock solid and handles great. I did 40k miles on the 11 towing and now 7k on the 18 so far.
