More TC's in the past?

I ran across these two pictures on the Yellowstone NP website, and it made me wonder: Did more people own truck campers "back in the day" than they do now. Any thoughts on this?

  • I wasnt born yet, but Id also like to add that people were also more family oriented back then. And I agree when I was a kid in the 70's and 80's lots of folks had TC's , And people liked to camp. Now days a lot of folks dont want to be outside period. I hope camping is making a come back.
  • On a recent trip to Colorado, we only saw a handful of truck campers. Way more 5th wheels.
  • If you take a survey of living people to see how many of them died in childhood, you will probably find that none of them did. Your sample is biased. :P

And back then the kids could ride in the cabover bed so you didn't need a crew cab.
How did we ever survive? We also drank out of the green garden hose, played outdoors in the sun all day, and did all this without cell phones and game boys.
  • And back then the kids could ride in the cabover bed so you didn't need a crew cab.
  • You could also throw your kids in the camper, so you and your family could vacation in your regular cab truck. Our first camper had an intercom to talk to the cab!

Yup, motorhomes came along later, and it was a while before the average user could afford one.

Before that you had regular and chassis mount truck campers galore and the pickup manufacturers used to run full page ads on how well their latest rigs could haul a camper.
