I'm a fly fisherman and have been wheeling some very bad "roads" since 2001. In my opinion, three things:
Smaller is better. Lighter is better. Keep it in the bed (NO REAR OVERHANG).
Find the smallest camper you are comfortable using. If you keep it in the bed of the truck, you minimize you potential for damage.
