Mounting a TV wall bracket

I have a 2007 Starcraft Antiqua 215 SSO hybrid. I want to mount a bracket for a flat screen TV on the wall between the entry door and the front bunk. Does anyone know what's inside that wall and what kind of fasteners I should use to mount that bracket?

  • We did this in our Travelstar, but used the wall to the left of our microwave. DH pulled out the microwaves and mounted a block of 1" wood in there and then put the wallmount into that. It's held up nicely so far...
  • Possibly additional framing is around the fridge cabinet. How sturdy could that the fridge be by only securing it to the deck framing? Having a nice swivel/pitch articulated arm could swing the TV to front or rear/side beds.
  • From what I've noticed on my 06 the framing is square aluminum, something on the order of 1 1/4". Very thin inner wall board and the plywood/filon outer skin sandwiching foam insulation. If you were to attach a backer board as shown by Roy you could catch the framing and screw the tv bracket to the board.

I used toggle bolts in the bathroom outer walls for towel hooks, had to push the insulation out of the way with a screwdriver to make room for the toggle bolts. Used 3/4 pine for backers for these giving me room to use 2 toggles, worked well.

Either way would probably work, but I personally would not attach the bracket directly to the wall unless you got lucky and found a framing member.
  • Maybe I'm a chicken but that is one project I let slide. I was given a wall mount a couple of years ago but decided the risk of damage was greater than the benefit. If I decide to try it I would have someone in the rv repair business do the install so the liability would be theirs.
  • i have the same problems. The unit has a formica cabinent around the fridge, and the tv currently sits free standing on the shelf. You can not get a good picture image unless you are sitting up in the bunk end. only options are roof, formica, or somehow mounting plywood on the wall above the fridge.
  • Definitely give it a thorough going over before starting. I recall several years ago either here or on Hybrid Explorer, some folks did this project and ended up with screws sticking through the exterior wall by quite some distance. Caution.

alot of folks do the back board idea of mounting a 3/4-inch piece of solid board first using moly bolts etc then mounting the TV mounts to the larger board. This spreads out the weight and won't allow the mounting bolts to pull thru the thin wall.

These are a couple of photos from google showing this...

  • When I did mine, I found the studs and screwed a piece of 3/4" plywood over a large area and then attached the tv mount onto it. Seems to be holding up ok. I was able to stain the plywood to a close match of the paneling.
  • Probably not much more than air and a 2x2 (if that) here and there. If it hasn't been built to mount the TV there then it's going to take major surgery to do so.
I would start with an electronic stud finder to see what's in there. You might follow that up with a small exploratory hole.
