I went from a 2008 Ford 6.4 Diesel to my current Chevy 2500HD 6.0 gas and am completely satisfied. I actually went out this weekend and test drove a few 2014 Ram 1500 with the new 8-speed transmission, made my truck feel like a dog too be honest.
If you keep payload in mind when buying your gas truck the vast majority of half-ton pickups on the market have more HP/TQ and more gears than the 3/4-ton trucks of just a few years ago. I like my 3/4-ton knowing I have a 3,100lb payload, half-tons we looked at are in the 1,400lb range.
If your commuting as much as you say you are, the new Ram 1500 with the 8-speed and 3.55 gears gets 20+mpg on the highway and was a great ride. Buddy of mine just picked up a 2014 GMC 1500 All-star edition and report's pretty much the same. Depending on your needs there are a lot of options out there these days.
