The last time we looked at a gas truck was 2003 when we bought our Dodge. Things have changed since then and the Ford 6.2 V8 has close to the same torque and more HP than our non HO 5.9 diesel.
Are people here who went from the older diesels to the newer V8's happy with their decisions? We will never tow more than 10,000 pounds and while there is no argument that the new and improved diesels are tow monsters they are much more expensive and complicated then the older ones.
Our 2003 2500HD Ram diesel was rated at 250hp and 460 ft/lbs of torque. That meant it could tow at a lower rpm. The 2005 Hemi powered Ram rated at 345hp and 365 ft/lbs of torque towed or 10k lb 5th wheel faster up the grades around the southeast although at 30%~ higher rpm and about 30%~ higher fuel consumption. The new diesels are torque monsters but until my little gas V8 shows any signs of trouble towing our 5th wheel, I have no desire to gamble with the potential for $10k+ repair over a drop of water. Even then, I think I'd rather downsize the trailer than upsize the headache.
