moving to Georgia

Wife wants to move from Texas to Georgia to be closer to family. I have a M/H that is 16 yrs old and was wondering about the taxes and license fees in Georgia for my coach and cars. A2015 Ford Edge and a 2003 Honda CRV.
Thanks for any input.

  • Thanks for all the replies. Would be around the Covington, Madison area. About 90-100 miles east of Atlanta

  • Georgia now operates under a one-time title ad valorum tax law that applies to motor vehicles (pull behind trailers still pay a yearly tax). Basically, you will pay a one time tax based to the value on the vehicle when you register it. In 2015, it was a 7% tax.
As a new resident, you can break the amount due into two payments in 12 months.
Additionally, there is an annual tag fee ($20) and a one-time title fee ($18).
Some counties require annual emissions testing (about $25).

You can plug in your VINs to see the tax online. I'm not sure if motorhome VINs will work. You may need the call and ask.
  • It depends on which county. Anywhere close to Atlanta you will pay dearly.
The smaller counties and towns will be less.
Your insurance also depends on the location. Larger cities higher premiums, rural areas a lot less.

What area are you looking to move to?

We moved from GA 4 years ago, we were west of Atlanta in Carroll County, when we moved temporarily to Jefferson county our car insurance dropped by half. We moved permanently to South Carolina and have lower property taxes and our insurance is lower.
  • Georgia website should have all that, including travel trailers.
