If you stumble onto the link for the online calculator for the title tax, do not depend on it to be accurate. The state has never updated the calculator since the inception of the title tax on March 1, 2013 and it still uses 6.5% for the calculation, but the actual precentage has gone up since then, to 7% (Official letter of TAVT rate) and by law can rise to as high as 9% should the state determine they are not taking in as much money as they would have, had they retained the old taxing system on all vehicles.

If you have a $30,000 RV you buy and want to title in Georgia, then the Title Tax will be $2,100, paid right up front at time of registration. Each year after that, you pay only the $20 tag fee.

And yes, you are reading correctly, a $100,000 RV will cost $7,000, again, right up front.

Yes, CA is different in SO many ways...
When I sell a vehicle here in Montana, I keep the plates. The state does not want them back. If I buy another vehicle, I can take those plates to the courthouse and put them on my new purchase.
The Bill Of Sale and/or the signed title is the temporary permit, good for 40 days from date of sale.
That is why we often say "50 states, 51 sets of registration rules!" No, it isn't quite true, but close!

Not sure how she thinks she can save money trying to register in NC. When we moved here from another state we got the "welcome to NC" registration taxes and fees. It was a few thousand dollars for our vehicles. You basically have to pay a one time sales tax, regardless if you bought and paid taxes in another state. It hurt quite a bit.

Never mind if she has no legitimate business registering a MH in another state that it's illegal if you are trying to evade taxes in your actual state.

just advise her to join this forum and ask for guidance here. as a rookie, she could use a lot of help other than tax evasion.

In my area, the local cops are always looking at license plates - of cars, trucks, trailers, campers, etc. They notice if a car with Florida plates is sitting in someone's driveway for more than 6 months. Which I believe in Connecticut means you have to register it in Connecticut - since you are using it the majority of the year in this state.

An RV / TT / 5th wheel sitting in a yard with out of state plates is noticeable.

I don't know how it is around you, but trying this registration stuff is known about and looked for. Just make sure you know what you are doing!

Motor Vehicle transfers in Georgia are subject to a "title tax". It is about 8% of the vehicle value, and takes the place of all current and future ad valorem (property) taxes on the vehicle, and every year after the first year, you only pay the $20 tag fee. This applies to all transactions both dealer and private party sales. There are no sales taxes charged. If you have a vehicle titled under the old system, prior to the "title tax", you continue to pay the yearly $20 tag fee plus the ad valorem tax calculated on the value of the vehicle and the local county/municipal/fire/school/etc millage rate. When a vehicle under the old system is transferred to another person, it then moves to the new "title tax" system.

The percentage of tax is reduced under certain circumstances, such as transfer to certain specified relatives.

non-motorized "vehicles" such as trailers do not pay the "title tax", they pay under the old system, tag fee and ad valorem tax each year.

If the Georgia resident buyer owns a S&B house on which they have a homestead exemption, they stand a very good chance of losing the homestead exemption if local tax officials discover they have vehicles registered elsewhere (out of state) or even to a different address within the state

As others have noted, give no advise to the buyer, remove your Georgia tag from the vehicle, and notify your county tax commissioner that you have transferred the vehicle to another person.

CA---plates stay on vehicle
That is WHY it is very important to fill out 'Notice of Transfer' form and turn into CA DMV.

The Notice of Transfer and Release of Liability relieves you of responsibility for parking and/or traffic violations and civil or criminal actions involving the vehicle after your date of sale. Your name, however, will not be removed from the DMV’s records until the new owner submits the vehicle title to the DMV for transfer of ownership, and pays the appropriate fees, and completes all transfer requirements.

Register the vehicle in the state on your driver's license
Several states have either already gone after folks who register in other states to avoid taxes or have considered it..

So register in the same state that licenses you to drive.
