Moving up 1/2 to 3/4 ton

After month's of contemplating and research I finally pulled the trigger on a 3/4 ton gas. I am upgrading from a 2011 F150 to a 2015 F250. One BIG question is, what can i expect in gas mileage on the F250 not towing and towing?

My daily driving is a mixture of city/highway i get about 16-18 now without the camper and 8-10 while towing.

For those of you with an F250 6.2l V8 what are you guys getting on these trucks?

Thanks.

  • I just returned this afternoon from a week in Florida to Saint George Island state park. I reset my trip meter when I pulled out of the barn with the rig. 2012 F-250 CC 4x4 with the 6.2 and 3.73 rear. Total miles traveled were 792 (635mi towing, remainder was running around for a week). I averaged 8.8 to 9.6 towing and 10.0 overall. I pull a 32ft fifth wheel that weighs in at around 10k loaded. I'm honestly not happy with the mileage. The truck pulls just fine, but I was kind a hoping for a little better. But after lots of research and reading my results seem very on par for my configuration and camper weigh. I'd be a lie if I didn't say I was sorta disappointed with my results. I also don't average but about 12.8 as my DD in mixed driving.
  • my experience so far. I too, traded a 2010 F-150- for a 2015 f-250. My towing mileage on two trips out runs about the same as my 150 did. 9-11mpg. I pull a 2590 BH Passport. About 6200# loaded. My truck is still breaking in. About 2800 miles on it so far. On my 150 I started seeing my best mileage at about 8,000 mi. To break the truck in I took a 1000 mi trip before towing. The computer showed 15.0 average driving anywhere from 65-70 on freeway and slower speeds on secondary roads and in town driving on the trip. Hand calculating I get within .5 difference from the computer which is close. If I drive shorter in town, stop and go type driving I'm getting about 13 average. Just made three runs to our airport driving in traffic, mostly 4 lane and it showed a 16.0 on the total of 150 miles. On a trip to a race about 60 miles each way i got 18 with a wind behind me and on the return trip against the wind 15.5 at 65 mph. This truck has a ton of power and the 6 speed tranny is much smoother than the 6 speed in my old f150. My hopes is to see at least 17 on highway trips empty when completely broken in and driving with some sense.. I already know the tow mileage is just as good. It takes some juice to feed 385Hp and I expected that, but the 6.2 is impressive and will really get up and go and has good reviews on the RV forum.
  • Driving habits, especially speed, will make a big difference in your mileage, towing or not.

I get 8-10 towing at 62 mph, in 5th gear, with 3.73 ratio. In town 12-13, at 25-35 mph. Highway 15-16, at 65-70 mph. At 75 and up, mileage drops off pretty fast!

Mr Remodeler has made a couple outrageous statements today.
  • Wow, 12-14 mph towing with a Dodge Diesel 2500 4x4? I get maybe 8-10 if I'm lucky with my Duramax 2500 4x4.

Really??? Not a lot of point folks buying the RAM 1500 3.0L diesel then if the 3/4 ton gets that mileage.
Sure you're not talking Canadian (Imperial) gallons??

  • It took a bit of a leap for me to buy a diesel. When not towing the RV, the pickup is my daily work truck. Most days we pull a small trailer of some sort. When not towing the new truck gets 24-28 mpg highway at 70 mph. City driving is 16-18. Towing the RV is 12-14, but not all RVs are the same weight or wind resistance.

Just thought I'd throw that out there....
