OP, yours are my thoughts and experience exactly. I towed my 31'TT with an F-150 for 10 years. After our last long trip with it I told the DW, "That's it. I'm done towing. Let's sell everything". It wasn't fun at all anymore.
And then we bought the awesome used 3/4 ton Duramax in my signature the following spring. A new lease on our towing life. A good diesel with compression braking is the ticket. Plenty of power and much safer, more enjoyable driving on mountain passes and all types of driving out here in the West.
Yes, diesels are pricey, but look for a good used one. Mine had 50,000 miles when I got it. I saved $$$$ doing that. An excellent TV.
