I would never argue that bigger is not better. I just do not find it necessary.
My F-150 E-Boost has towed my 6200 lb. 25 ft. TT for 30,000 mile from the Rockies through the desert. I never thought I needed to go faster, father or lacking in reserve power.
Sure if a good bargain on a F-250 or F-350 came up I would buy it but I would not drive any faster, farther or buy a bigger TT. However, should the DW someday decide we need a 5ver or a larger TT, then a new truck would be in order.
I average 10 mpg as do most folks towing a TT. If someone tells me they get 11.5 mpg what is the big deal? A big deal is towing a 25 ft. TT and getting 17 mpg.
As for diesels I have little interest in them. True they give you more torque and power; but it comes at the price of increased maintenance, initial cost and stink. None of which I would invite on myself.
In short if the opportunity presented itself I would go big, otherwise, I just match the truck to the load. Others seem to enjoy the torque and horses.
In addition I would trade all the electronic "conveniences" for a decent stick shift.
