The formula doesn't seem to take wind speed into consideration. Recently, going west on I10 I used up much more gas than returning eastward.
It's not an exact science - your results WILL vary from trip to trip.
Wind speed certainly does affect mpg but thats not the issue here. All things being equal a trailer with a high drag coefficient will generally result in lower mpg than a trailer with a lower drag coefficient. So light winds, heavy winds, hills, no hills etc...in each circumstance the higher drag coefficient trailer will do poorer mpg wise.
