The post in the link points out that the 12v Cummins produced 72db at 60mph towing his boat. The newest Cummins produced 71db at 70mph towing the gooseneck in the test. Not much difference in real volume but a huge difference in perceived volume with the clatter gone. You can quiet the clatter but, you can't quiet the low frequency noise. To those who talk at 140db, the new one is silent. To them, the 12v and ISBe 24v wasn't objectionably loud either. They probably don't even hear the 250hz drone. I deal with this at work with low frequency noise resonating through concrete buildings keeping people awake. Half the people can't even hear it. To those who can, it's loud and annoying. I can hear it so I can identify the problem and fix it. Chrysler has been trying for years with vibration dampeners in their trucks.
Most likely the 72db was towing the boat on the flat, the Ike is at near full power working hard.
My current 2001 is not very loud when towing the 5er on the flat either, once it is working pulling a grade it does speak up a bit.
The build sheet states extra sound deadening.
