I don't understand how you are coming up with " these little pickups burn so much fuel." ? I'm running combined in the 28-29,000# range and I have never gotten below 8.5 average on a tank of fuel and that is running 70+. It takes so much power to move a load and that amount of power is going to use a curtain amount of fuel.
The pick ups in the test that TFL Truck got 5.7 to 6.7 miles per gallon. I expected that a car like pickup should get better fuel economy than a heavy duty truck if both are loaded the same.....especially when the heavy truck has a powertrain set up for much heavier work than 33000 lbs. An engine delivers much more horsepower hours per gallon of fuel when it is working harder. The Cummins in the Kenworth is not running very efficient when it is turning 1600 rpm and only has to make 150 HP.
