I am a former senior purchasing analyst, looking at data and breaking it down is actually stuff I like to do. Not every on is the same and there is probably stuff you do that others think is stupid so don't hate.
Crunch all the numbers you want. Unless you can guarantee that all the other variables that affect mileage are held constant, concluding the differences (which are minuscule at that) are the results of the brand of fuel is simply flawed.
Controlling all the variables to determine fuel economy by brand is very difficult so the other way to skin this cat is to have a lot of data that includes all the variables so you have a statistical sample. I would say 2-5 years is statistically significant for this discussion
