Mud Bogging in the Coconino NF

Traveling south of Flagstaff today, considered staying at a dispersed camping area in the Coconino NF. Unfortunately, it was so muddy it wouldn't have been much fun so we turned around.

Glad I didn't have to get out of the truck in that stuff! I had to pull off the road to get turned around and it got a little slick. It took two tries just to turn a corner. I intended to continue moving forward and drive back up on the road, but the edge of the road turned out to be so steep I would have seriously tossed the camper around, so I backed up and went back up on the road the at same place I left it.

I was in 4H once we were in the mud. The short reverse I did after getting back on the road was to get the front axle to disengage.

  • Piece of cake with your coordinates and Google Earth. You were heading south to southeast. The culvert was a dead giveaway. Too much time on my hands.

Looks like Willard Springs road around 9469R

That's exactly where it is. Good job!

  • ....looks like the regular roads around our house all summer long when its raining LOL :B
  • As they say, discretion is the better part of valor.

Good move turning around and getting out. One never seems to know when the road base turns bottom-less in that stuff, and stuck you'll become.

Sure is nice to have four wheel drive.
  • That's what I was hoping to avoid.

We drove up the Apache Trail today, from Apache Junction to Roosevelt. The forecast today was about 70% chance of rain. We almost didn't do the 22 miles of dirt road, but decided to anyway after making it to the end of the paved road and it didn't look like rain was eminent. We no sooner got to Roosevelt Dam and back on the pavement and the clouds opened up. I planned that well, if I do say so!

  • I got so stuck up there years ago. It took three days for the ground to dry out enough for me to get out.
