Jon,
I used to use chemicals in the tanks but found that they often smell almost as bad as the stuff you are trying to treat! For the past 20 years or so, we have been using nothing but lots of plain water and have not had any odor or tank problems at all. I use a wand down the toilet about once per month to really get all the stuff out of of the corners of the tank but other than that it is just plain water. I also put in some dishwashing or laundry detergent in the tank just before pulling out when we are moving to another campground.
If, for some reason, we are not going to use the trailer for a long length of time, I would often put some type of chemical in the tank to prevent strong odors. Brand didn't really matter. This process has worked for us for many years.
As far as locking up the trailer to prevent theft, the only thing we have ever done is lock the doors and keep a padlock on the coupler. We have been all over the country and have never had a single theft problem. A lot of our camping has been done in military campgrounds and we always feel very safe and secure when in those areas. The rest has been in public and State/federal campgrounds and again we have never had a problem. I don't think you really need to be overly worried about somebody stealing your trailer when you are gone for the day or longer. Just keep it insured and enjoy your day.
Thank you for your service! It is guys and gals like you who allow us to enjoy the freedom to camp and travel in this great country! :)
